The live-chat widget on your website is the fastest customer-support channel you can offer. A small chat bubble in the bottom corner; visitors click, type, get a reply in real time. With the AI bot enabled, common questions get answered instantly without your team waking up; with auto-handoff, complex tickets land in your agents' inbox with full context. Setup is a one-line snippet: no build step, no dev required.

The Deskwoot live chat widget lets your website visitors start conversations directly from your site. It loads quickly, works seamlessly on desktop and mobile, and can be customized to match your brand. Below you'll find step-by-step instructions for setting up the widget, tips for getting the most out of it, and answers to common questions.

Creating the widget inbox

  1. Navigate to Settings > Inboxes > Add Inbox.
  2. Select Live Chat as the channel, then Website Live Chat.
  3. Click Create Inbox. Deskwoot creates the inbox and opens its settings.
  4. On the Settings tab, configure the widget:
    • Give the inbox a descriptive name (e.g., "Main Site Chat"). Only your team sees it.
    • Set the Widget Color so the widget matches your website's look and feel.
    • Write a Welcome Heading and Welcome Tagline that greet visitors when they open the chat.
    • Pick the Widget Position, Bottom Left or Bottom Right.
  5. Save each section you changed.

Installing the widget

After creating the inbox, the Widget Installation card on its Settings tab shows a JavaScript snippet with your widget token. To install it:

  1. Copy the provided code snippet.
  2. Paste it into the <head> section or just before the closing </body> tag of every page where you want the widget to appear.
  3. If you use a tag manager like Google Tag Manager, add the snippet as a Custom HTML tag instead.

After deploying, open your site in an incognito window to confirm the widget loads correctly.

The visitor's email address

A new website live chat has no step before the chat: visitors write right away. When Fynn answers the chat, he answers first and then asks once in the chat for an email address, so your team can still reply by email after the visitor leaves. The name is optional. If you want the address before the first message, turn on Ask for email before the chat on the Settings tab of the inbox. To ask for a name, a phone number or your own fields first, set up the form on the Pre Chat Form tab (Startup plan and up). While it is on, it replaces the email step. Without an AI bot on the inbox, nobody asks in the chat, so visitors stay anonymous unless you turn on the email step. Live chats you created before keep their setting.

Widget customization

Customize the widget appearance from your inbox settings. You can change the color, position, welcome title, tagline, and greeting message. The widget automatically adapts to mobile screens, so there's no need for separate mobile configuration.

Best-practice tips

  • Keep the welcome message short. One or two friendly sentences perform better than a long paragraph.
  • Match your brand colors to maintain a consistent visitor experience across your site.
  • Turn on Ask for email before the chat if no AI bot answers the chat and your team cannot reply right away, so you can follow up by email.
  • Test on multiple devices after installation to verify the widget displays and functions properly on both desktop and mobile browsers.

Troubleshooting

  • Widget not appearing: Make sure the JavaScript snippet is placed correctly and that no browser extensions or ad blockers are preventing it from loading. Clear your cache and try an incognito window.
  • Styling conflicts: If your website's CSS interferes with the widget's appearance, check for global styles that might override iframe or button elements.
  • Slow loading: Placing the snippet just before the closing </body> tag ensures the widget loads after your main content, minimizing any impact on page speed.

Frequently asked questions

Does the widget work on every website builder?
Yes. WordPress, Webflow, Shopify, Wix, Squarespace, plain HTML, Next.js, React, Vue: anything that lets you paste a script tag. Google Tag Manager works too.
Do visitors need a Deskwoot account to chat?
No. Visitors write right away. In a new website chat, Fynn answers first and then asks once for an email address in the chat. If you want the address first, turn on Ask for email before the chat, and a form before the chat (Startup plan and up) can ask for more. Conversations are tied to a visitor token so the same visitor keeps their history across page navigation.
What happens when no agents are online?
Visitors can still write, and their message lands in Deskwoot as a normal conversation. If the chat got their email, from Fynn in the chat or from Ask for email before the chat, you can follow up even after they leave. With Business Hours (Startup plan and up) the widget shows your hours and an unavailable message outside them. If an AI bot answers the inbox, it replies right away and, as a Support Bot, hands the conversation to a human when needed.
Can I show the widget on some pages and not others?
Yes. Load the snippet only on the pages that should show the chat. You can also turn on Hide chat bubble (Chat Bubble section of the Settings tab) and open the chat from your own button with window.deskwoot.open(). If you use a tag manager, configure a trigger that fires only on the desired URLs. Useful for landing pages where chat shouldn't compete with a CTA.
Does the widget track visitors with cookies?
The widget sets no cookies. For a new visitor it stores nothing until they open the chat or send a message. Once they open the chat, it notes that in localStorage (the Returning visitor condition of chat triggers reads it), and once they write, it keeps an anonymous visitor ID there so they keep their history. Cookieless Mode (Startup plan and up) also leaves out localStorage and sessionStorage: the visitor is then recognized only for the current page session, and the history is not kept when the page reloads.
How fast does the widget load?
The loader script is about 7 KB gzipped and loads asynchronously, so it does not block your page. The chat itself runs in frames served from deskwoot.com.
Can I customize the look?
Widget Color, Widget Position (Bottom Right or Bottom Left), a light or dark Widget Theme, Launcher Title, the welcome texts and Reply Time, all under Settings → Inboxes → your inbox → Settings → Widget Appearance. A custom avatar sits under Features, and the pre-chat form has its own Pre Chat Form tab.
Does it support file uploads from visitors?
Yes, when File Attachments is on (Features section of the Settings tab). Images, PDFs, office documents and other common file types up to 5 MB per file. With the Virus scan add-on ($5 per month per workspace), every file is checked for malware before agents can open it.
Can I use the widget on a multilingual site?
Yes. With Widget language set to Automatic (from the page), the widget follows the language of your page and switches with it. On the Business plan and up, one click translates your Welcome Heading, Tagline and Channel Greeting into other languages, so 'Hi!' becomes 'Hallo!' for German visitors.
How is widget usage billed?
Each conversation through the widget counts as one regular conversation toward your plan's monthly cap. AI bot replies + Copilot actions count once toward the separate AI quota.
Can I see who's currently browsing my site?
No, Deskwoot has no live list of visitors. To greet visitors proactively, use Chat triggers on the Configuration tab of the live chat inbox (time on page, URL contains, returning visitor).
Does the widget work in iframes?
Yes, but iframe context limits some features (no proactive auto-open). Most teams embed in the parent page; iframe is mainly for testing.
Can I use the widget on Shopify or WooCommerce?
Absolutely. Paste the snippet into your theme's layout file. For Shopify, use the theme.liquid file; for WooCommerce, use your theme's footer.php or a header/footer script plugin.
