Help center article navigation
On this page
Every article in your help center comes with a way to the next one: your collections on the left, "On this page" on the right, and previous, next and more guides at the end. Most of it works on its own. You decide whether the collections sidebar shows, how the collection cards on the home page look, and the short label of each article in the sidebar. This guide describes Help Center 2.0. A help center created before it shows the previous design until you upgrade to Help Center 2.0.
What an article page shows
- Breadcrumb above the title: Help Center, the collection, the article. Where the sidebar is not shown, the collection in the breadcrumb opens a menu with all its guides.
- Updated date and reading time under the title, and the language menu when the article is translated.
- On this page on the right: the headings (H2) of the article, with the section you are reading highlighted. It shows when an article has 2 or more headings. On smaller screens it folds under the title.
- Ask Fynn about this guide under "On this page", when your help center answers questions (see Fynn answers in your help center search).
- Was this guide helpful? at the end of the article (see Help article feedback).
- Previous and Next: the articles before and after this one in the collection.
- Keep reading: up to 3 more guides from the same collection.
The order of the articles in a collection is the order you set in the dashboard.
Under Settings > Article pages you can switch off On this page, Was this guide helpful? and Previous, next and Keep reading for the whole help center.
The collections sidebar
With Collections sidebar on article pages switched on in the Settings tab, article and category pages get a left column with all your collections. The current collection is open and lists its guides, with the article you are reading highlighted. A long collection shows 6 guides around the current one and See all for the rest. The sidebar shows on wide screens. On smaller screens the breadcrumb takes over: its collection opens the list of guides.
Switch it off for a help center with few, short collections: then articles get a single column with "On this page" next to it.
Short labels for the sidebar
A long title reads well as a page heading but gets clumsy in a narrow sidebar. In the article editor, the Sidebar label sets a short version, for example "Refunds" for "How to request a refund and what to expect". The sidebar and the breadcrumb menu use it; the heading, the page title and the SEO title keep the full title. Leave it empty and the full title is used. Each language of an article can have its own label.
Collection cards on the home page
The home page shows your collections as cards with an icon, the name, the description and the number of guides. By default a card also lists the first guides of the collection, 6 on the wide first card and 3 on the others, and links all of them. Switch on Plain collection cards in the Settings tab and every card becomes one link to its collection page, without the list. That keeps a home page with many collections calm. What sits behind each icon (a slice of your hero picture, your brand color or the icon alone) is set under Collection icons, see Advanced help center branding.
A collection without published articles stays off the home page until one lands in it. Give every collection an icon and a short description so the cards look finished. Collections and their order are managed in the Categories tab.
Frequently asked questions
Is the sidebar set per article or for the whole help center?
For the whole help center. Switch Collections sidebar on article pages on or off in the Settings tab.
Why does an article have no "On this page"?
It shows when an article has 2 or more H2 headings. Give longer articles clear H2 sections and the list appears by itself. If no article shows it, check that On this page is switched on under Settings > Article pages.
Does the sidebar label change my SEO title?
No. The page heading and the SEO title always use the full title. The label only changes the sidebar and the breadcrumb menu.
How do I change the order of Previous and Next?
They follow the order of the articles in their collection, which you set in the dashboard.
When should I use plain collection cards?
When you have many collections and want a calm home page where visitors pick a topic first. Keep the default cards with guides when you have few collections and want articles one click away.
Can each language have its own sidebar label?
Yes. Each translation of an article can carry its own label, so the sidebar reads naturally in every language.
